Prince Edward Champions Global Youth Development in Lagos

By Janefrances Chibuzor

His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will host a series of events in Lagos, Nigeria, from 17 to 23 November 2025 to promote the global expansion of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award.

Prince Edward, Chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, will convene nearly 200 young people from over 50 countries, alongside leaders of the Award, policymakers, and representatives of global youth movements. Participants will engage in a three-day intensive youth leadership programme before joining the Award’s triennial Forum, focused on expanding access to the programme worldwide.

In the past year, almost 1.2 million young people in more than 130 countries took part in the Award. While UK participants make up roughly half of this number, Kenya ranks second, and Nigeria has recorded a 37% increase in participation over the past year, reflecting growing interest across West Africa.

Ahead of the Award’s 70th anniversary next year, new analysis shows that the social value generated by young people completing the Award has surpassed £1 billion for the first time. This figure, calculated using a methodology developed by PwC, reflects the impact of volunteering, improved mental and physical health, and social cohesion.

The Award has gained momentum globally, with organisations such as the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, and the International Labour Organization highlighting the importance of skills developed outside the classroom, including teamwork, resilience, communication, and problem-solving.

During his visit, the Duke will meet with the President of Nigeria in Abuja, engage senior ministers and international development agencies in Lagos to deepen collaboration on non-formal education, and attend major events hosted by the Governor of Lagos State and the British Deputy High Commissioner.

Mr. Martin Houghton-Brown, Secretary General of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, said:
“More young people worldwide are embracing the Award’s challenges and learning beyond the classroom. In an era where knowledge is instantly accessible through technology, the Award provides a unique opportunity to develop skills that give young people a ‘human edge’ – from teamwork and creativity to determination and adaptability. Our gathering in Lagos aims to increase opportunities for young people everywhere to take on this challenge.”

British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Mr. Jonny Baxter, added:
“The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award highlights the potential of Nigeria’s youth. As partners, the UK and Nigeria share a commitment to empower the next generation, create jobs, and unlock economic opportunities. We applaud Nigeria’s bold reforms and are ready to collaborate to drive growth, stability, and prosperity for both nations.”

About the Award

Founded in 1956 by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is the world’s leading framework for non-formal education. Delivered through schools, youth organisations, and community groups, it empowers young people aged 14 to 24 to develop skills, resilience, and a spirit of service.
