British former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a road accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria, which claimed the lives of two people, according to local police. Joshua sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention.
In a statement, Ogun State police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi said the Lexus SUV conveying the boxer collided with another vehicle under circumstances that are still being investigated. Joshua was seated in the rear of the vehicle at the time of the crash. Authorities said he could not immediately be reached for comment.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said preliminary findings suggest the vehicle was travelling above the legally prescribed speed limit, lost control while overtaking, and crashed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside. Witnesses reported that there were four occupants in the Lexus, with Joshua’s security detail following in a separate vehicle.
According to eyewitness accounts, two passengers in the Lexus died at the scene. Joshua, who has British-Nigerian heritage and attended boarding school in Ikenne, has been in Nigeria following his victory over Jake Paul on December 19. The boxer is expected to return to the ring in 2026 for a long-anticipated bout with Tyson Fury.
