As the world marks International Women’s Day 2026 today, the Secretary General of the European Union and Special Envoy to Africa for Socioeconomic Diplomacy, Trade and Investment at BIGWIL International Community, Prof. Sara Sky Schutte, has called for stronger commitment to empowering women, describing it as both a moral responsibility and a strategic investment in global development.
In a message commemorating the annual celebration held every March 8 to honour the remarkable contributions of women in society, Prof. Schutte emphasized that women’s participation in economic and social development across Africa and the world remains indispensable.
She noted that despite their achievements, many women still face barriers that limit access to opportunities in education, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
According to her, empowering women must move beyond symbolic recognition to practical action that strengthens their role in shaping economies and communities.
“At BIGWIL International Community, we are committed to promoting socioeconomic diplomacy, trade, and investment that benefit women and communities,” she stated.
“We are working to create opportunities for women to access education, entrepreneurship and leadership roles that will drive innovation and economic growth.
”The 2026 celebration, themed “Give To Gain,” underscores the importance of investing resources, support, and opportunities in women as a pathway to sustainable progress.
Prof. Schutte said the theme aligns with ongoing initiatives aimed at ensuring women are active participants in development policies and economic transformation.
She also encouraged greater collaboration among governments, institutions, and global stakeholders to advance programs that uplift women and girls across Africa.
Prof. Schutte reaffirmed her commitment as Special Envoy to Africa to support initiatives that empower women and help accelerate progress toward the United Nations’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those addressing gender equality, economic inclusion, and social advancement. “To the women of Africa and beyond, your strength, resilience and achievements inspire us.
Let us continue breaking barriers and shaping a more inclusive world,” she said.International Women’s Day is celebrated annually across the globe to recognise the achievements of women in political, social, cultural, and economic spheres while also advocating gender equality and greater opportunities for women and girls.
