Calabar Carnival 2025: Where Culture Drives Commerce

The Calabar Festivals and Carnivals 2025 marked its 20th anniversary, reinforcing its place as one of Africa’s most influential cultural and economic events. Themed “Traces of Times,” the month-long festival transformed Calabar into a living showcase of heritage, creativity, and opportunity.
Over 32 days, visitors experienced a vibrant mix of parades, music, cultural dances, fashion shows, food festivals, and sporting events. From the Parade of the Bands to the Children’s and Bikers’ Carnivals, the city pulsed with energy, attracting both domestic and international audiences.

Visitor numbers surged, with 248,000 people attending the festival—a 24% increase over 2024. Daily averages reached approximately 7,750 visitors, highlighting the city’s capacity to handle high-volume tourism. Road transport accounted for 87% of arrivals, while air and sea travel contributed 9% and 4% respectively. The influx generated an estimated ₦10.6 billion in transportation spending, reflecting the festival’s economic reach.

Tourism sites saw record activity. Obudu Mountain Resort, Marina Resort, and Kwa Falls collectively hosted over 370,000 visitors, nearly 80% higher than 2023. Hotels reported 72% average occupancy, peaking above 95% during mid-December, with 26,000 room nights booked and ₦3.9 billion in accommodation revenue. Food and beverage services earned ₦2.05 billion, as visitors explored Calabar’s culinary delights.

Beyond hospitality, the festival drove the creative and night economy. Ticketed events generated ₦130 million, while top nightclubs recorded ₦460 million in revenue. Ancillary activities—including logistics, car rentals, food vending, merchandising, and digital streaming—added ₦1.7 billion, supporting hundreds of small and medium enterprises.
Media coverage amplified the impact. Approximately 780,000 spectators attended events on-site, while over 1.3 billion people viewed via television networks and more than 120 million engaged through live streaming and social media, boosting Calabar’s global profile.

In total, the Calabar Carnival 2025 injected ₦17.4 billion into the state economy, creating jobs, stimulating businesses, and showcasing the power of culture as an economic engine. The festival demonstrates that heritage and commerce can coexist, turning Calabar into a year-round destination for tourism, investment, and cultural innovation.
