Cross River State Appoints 13-Member Committee to Review Carnival Calabar’s Impact

The Cross River State government, under the leadership of Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, has approved the appointment of a 13-member committee to review and assess the impact of Carnival Calabar and the Annual Festival after two- decade of hosting.

According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nsa Gill, the appointment of the committee aims to enhance government policies and cultural initiatives, with High Chief Edem Duke serving as Chairman. The committee will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to refine and improve the event’s concept, ensuring its continued relevance and sustainability.

The review is focused on improving and refreshing the carnival in line with global trends in tourism product development and repackaging. The committee’s terms of reference include reviewing the past 20 years to identify high and low points, identifying the key success factors, restructuring the bands as a creative entity, and exploring organic ways to enhance the carnival as a cultural expression. It will also initiate the establishment of a carnival museum to preserve the carnival culture, advise on improving regulations and organization to align with global best practices, harness marketing opportunities to boost funding, and develop strategies to place Carnival Calabar on the international tourism roadmap. Additionally, the committee is tasked with suggesting a roadmap for the next 20 years to guide operators and engaging relevant stakeholders in formulating its recommendations.

The committee members include High Chief Edem Duke as Chairman, Barr. Mrs. Onari Duke, Senator Florence Ita Giwa, Senator Gershom Bassey, Hon. Chris Agibe, Dr. Uyam Ugot, Hon. Eric Anderson, Sir Gabe Onah, Barr. Ededem Ani (AG), Pastor Johnnie Akpanke, Ambassador Ikechi Uko, Professor Esekong Andrew Essien, and Professor A. Owan-Eno as Secretary.
