Cunha Stunner Ends Arsenal Run as Manchester United Blow Title Race Wide Open

By Victor Eludire

Manchester United reignited the Premier League title race on Sunday evening with a dramatic 3–2 victory over leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, ending a seven-year winless run in North London. Arsenal had gone ahead in the 29th minute when Lisandro Martinez inadvertently turned Martin Ødegaard’s shot into his own net, but a costly error from Martin Zubimendi allowed Bryan Mbeumo to intercept and round David Raya for his 50th Premier League goal, drawing United level before the break.

United moved ahead five minutes into the second half as Patrick Dorgu combined neatly with Bruno Fernandes before unleashing a stunning strike off the underside of the crossbar. Mikel Arteta responded with a quadruple change, and the pressure eventually paid off when substitute Mikel Merino prodded home from a corner after Senne Lammens had pushed Bukayo Saka’s effort wide. However, Matheus Cunha, who had failed to clear Merino’s equaliser off the line, had the final say in the 87th minute, curling a superb long-range winner into the bottom-right corner.

The defeat was a rare one for Arsenal, who conceded three goals in a match for the first time since December 2023, ending a run of 121 games in all competitions without letting in more than twice. United also set a notable record, becoming the first visiting team to score two or more goals from outside the box at the Emirates in a Premier League game since Tottenham in October 2008. Despite Arsenal registering more shots (15 to 10) and a higher expected goals figure (1.2 to 0.73), United’s clinical finishing proved decisive, lifting them to fourth place while Arsenal’s lead at the summit was cut to four points.
