Destination Canada has launched its Wealth & Wellbeing Index, a groundbreaking tool to measure tourism’s broad impact across Canada. This initiative moves beyond traditional metrics like visitor spending and arrivals, highlighting tourism’s role in economic growth, job creation, infrastructure development, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability.
Tourism is a key driver of Canada’s economic resilience, with the sector’s GDP expanding by 9.5% in 2023. It contributes significantly to community infrastructure, fostering connectivity across provinces and enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors. The industry also promotes diversity, with 20% of tourism businesses owned by women and 36% by immigrants.
Public sentiment remains strong, with over 80% of Canadians consistently recognizing tourism’s positive contributions to their communities. The Wealth & Wellbeing Index, aligned with global standards like the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, provides valuable insights to guide investment and ensure long-term prosperity.
Marsha Walden, President & Chief Executive Officer, Destination Canada, stressed the importance of leveraging tourism’s full potential: “Economic growth doesn’t exist in isolation—it’s part of a larger ecosystem where vibrant communities, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship are indispensable. By considering tourism’s impact across all metrics, we can deliver long-term benefits that support communities and secure Canada’s position as a leader in sustainable tourism.”
As global competition intensifies, this initiative ensures that Canada remains at the forefront of sustainable and inclusive tourism, driving economic prosperity while preserving its rich cultural and natural heritage.
