Empowering Nigeria’s Economy through Agriculture: The Story of Mr. Julius Iyoghiojie’s LVI Farm

In a bid to revitalise Nigeria’s economy, entrepreneurs are diversifying into sectors like agriculture, real estate, and technology, seeking new avenues for income and growth. Agriculture, in particular, has become a focal point. With a population of over 200 million, Nigeria’s reliance on oil is no longer sustainable, as many citizens now live in poverty. Amid this, some visionaries like Mr. Julius Iyoghiojie, the Chief Farmer at LVI Farm and Managing Director of LVI Art Gallery, are leading the charge to ensure food security and economic stability.

Located in Epe, Lagos, LVI Farm spans 36 acres and includes a variety of crops, from cassava and vegetables to fruits. Mr. Iyoghiojie shared that the farm is strategically divided into different segments to accommodate different crops based on the land’s texture. The farm currently has thriving harvests of okra, tomatoes, and other vegetables, with future prospects of even larger yields.

During a visit to the farm, it became clear that Mr. Iyoghiojie is committed not just to commercial farming but to giving back to his country. He views farming as a way to ensure food security, reduce poverty, and support the growth of Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Despite his background as a petroleum engineer, logistics expert, and cultural promoter, Mr. Iyoghiojie sees farming as a solution to Nigeria’s challenges. “It’s about proving that we can make a difference and help boost the nation’s economy,” he said.

The farm’s use of solar-powered irrigation is another key feature. The dry season poses a challenge for many farmers, but through solar technology, Mr. Iyoghiojie is able to provide consistent water to crops, ensuring year-round productivity. He hopes the government will provide more support in the form of equipment leasing, as this would help reduce production costs and improve the overall farming experience.

As Nigeria continues to face economic challenges, the lesson from Mr. Iyoghiojie’s journey is clear: diversification and embracing new sectors such as agriculture are crucial. Every Nigerian has a role to play in strengthening the economy, whether through farming or other ventures. The time to act is now.
In the same development, Taiye Tayo the manager at LVI Farm, has been in farming for 20 years. Although he did not study agriculture academically, his passion for farming stems from his childhood. His father was a farmer, and Tayo would often help him, which inspired his interest in agriculture. He now specialises in irrigation and oversees the farm’s operations.

Despite challenges in the farming industry, Tayo remains committed to his work. He explains that his extensive experience in irrigation has helped him overcome many obstacles. When asked about any challenges, Tayo shared that he was able to handle them well, thanks to his expertise.

Tayo is originally from Benin Republic and moved to Lagos years ago. He didn’t complete secondary school but has gained practical knowledge over the years. He encourages anyone interested in farming to pursue it, especially in regions where the land is fertile. He pointed out that different crops, like watermelon and pepper, thrive in various conditions, and choosing crops wisely is key. For instance, cassava doesn’t require much water, making it an ideal crop for land with limited water availability.

Though he lives on the farm, Tayo ensures that the farm is secure by working closely with the security team, who help monitor the area. Despite being a farm manager, Tayo doesn’t see farming as his lifelong passion but acknowledges its importance in contributing to Nigeria’s food supply.

Tayo’s message to aspiring farmers is simple: “If you want to farm, come and learn. It’s a good industry, and it helps feed the nation.” His dedication to the work at LVI Farm shows that even in challenging conditions, farming remains a vital and rewarding sector for Nigeria.
