The Enugu State Government has formally reacted to the postponement of the 2025 National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST), expressing both deep disappointment and full understanding following the announcement by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy that the event would no longer proceed as scheduled due to rising insecurity across the country.
In a statement issued on Saturday morning, the Honourable Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Ugochi Madueke, who also serves as the Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), NAFEST 2025, described the decision as a deeply painful one for the state, particularly as about 30 states had already arrived in Enugu with their cultural troupes, support teams, and officials fully prepared for the festival’s opening activities.
Hon. Madueke explained that although the postponement came at a time when Enugu was completely ready to showcase what she described as “one of the most anticipated cultural festivals in recent years”, the state acknowledges and respects the reasons behind the Federal Ministry’s decision.
The Commissioner commended the Honourable Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, as well as the Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, noting that their decision reflects responsible leadership during a period of heightened national concern. She also extended profound appreciation to the Governor of Enugu State for his unwavering support and commitment throughout the preparations.
Hon. Madueke assured all stakeholders that Enugu State remains fully committed to hosting NAFEST once a new date is announced. She reaffirmed that the state’s readiness and enthusiasm have not diminished, adding that Enugu will continue working closely with all relevant agencies to ensure that NAFEST ultimately holds under conditions that guarantee the comfort and enjoyment of everyone involved.
