Ethiopian Airlines Expands Domestic Reach, Opens Three New Airports To Deepen National Connectivity

By Janefrances Chibuzor

In a decisive move that underscores its dominance in African aviation, Ethiopian Airlines has announced plans to inaugurate three new domestic airports and commence passenger services to the destinations by mid-April 2026.

The new airports, located in Negele Borena, Gore Metu, and Debre Markos, mark another bold chapter in the airline’s expansion drive — one that continues to reshape Ethiopia’s air transport landscape while reinforcing its reputation as Africa’s largest network operating carrier.

For communities in these regions, the development signals more than just the arrival of aircraft. It represents access — to markets, to opportunities, and to the broader national economy.

Ethiopian Airlines plans to operate three weekly passenger flights to each of the new destinations, a schedule designed to stimulate commerce, encourage mobility, and integrate previously underserved areas into the country’s fast-growing aviation ecosystem.

With the addition of the three routes, the airline’s domestic network will grow to 26 destinations, further strengthening connectivity across Ethiopia’s diverse terrain. Industry observers note that the expansion aligns with the carrier’s long-standing strategy of leveraging aviation as a catalyst for economic growth and regional development.

Speaking on the development, Group Chief Executive Officer Mesfin Tasew described the inauguration as a milestone not only for the airline but also for Ethiopia as a nation.

“The inauguration of these three new airports, along with the commencement of passenger services, represents a major milestone for Ethiopian Airlines and for the nation as a whole,” he said. “This expansion reflects our steadfast commitment to enhancing connectivity within Ethiopia and serves as a powerful driver of economic growth and regional development.”

According to him, the airline’s broader mission remains the creation of an inclusive and integrated air transport network that empowers communities and unlocks economic opportunities. He added that the carrier is determined to make safe, reliable and efficient air travel accessible to all Ethiopians, regardless of geography.

The announcement comes as Ethiopian Airlines continues to modernise its domestic travel infrastructure. Beyond expanding routes, the airline has intensified efforts to upgrade facilities, renovate terminals and enhance passenger experience across its domestic network. Aviation analysts say this dual focus on expansion and infrastructure renewal positions the carrier to meet rising passenger demand while maintaining operational efficiency.

The airline’s domestic growth trajectory has been steady. In 2025, it inaugurated Yabello Airport as its 23rd domestic destination, a move widely viewed as a strategic step toward deepening air access in emerging regional hubs. The addition of Negele Borena, Gore Metu and Debre Markos further consolidates that momentum.

For Ethiopia — a country with vast geography and varied topography — aviation remains a vital bridge. Improved air connectivity reduces travel time, facilitates trade, supports tourism and enhances government and private sector operations. By extending its domestic footprint, Ethiopian Airlines is not only broadening its commercial reach but also reinforcing its role as a national development partner.

Across Africa, where infrastructure gaps continue to challenge mobility, the airline’s expansion strategy stands out as a model of how a flag carrier can drive socio-economic transformation from within its home market while maintaining a strong continental and global presence.

As mid-April approaches, anticipation is building in the three host communities. For residents, entrepreneurs and investors alike, the sound of the first scheduled commercial flight touching down will symbolise more than connectivity — it will represent inclusion in a rapidly advancing national growth story.

And once again, Ethiopian Airlines appears poised to convert runway investments into tangible economic altitude.
