Ethiopian Airlines and Boeing have announced a new agreement for the purchase of six 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, reinforcing the airline’s long-term expansion strategy and fully exercising commitments from its landmark 2023 order.
The new aircraft will be deployed to strengthen intercontinental operations from Addis Ababa while increasing cargo capacity amid rising global demand for long-haul travel.
According to Ethiopian Airlines, the addition of the fuel-efficient wide-body jets will further modernize its fleet and enhance operational efficiency across key international routes.
“Converting the options of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner airplanes into a firm order is truly a proud moment for us,” said Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mesfin Tasew.
He noted that the move reflects the airline’s sustained growth trajectory and its readiness for future expansion. “Growing our fleet size with ultra-modern airplanes such as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, we are further maintaining operational excellence and passengers’ comfort,” he added.
Ethiopian Airlines currently operates Africa’s largest fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners, including both the 787-8 and 787-9 variants.
The aircraft are widely deployed across intercontinental routes linking Addis Ababa with destinations in Europe, Asia, and North America, as well as major intra-African routes that support connectivity across the continent.
Boeing welcomed the renewed commitment, highlighting the aircraft’s continued relevance to the airline’s growth strategy.
“We’re proud that Ethiopian Airlines continues to look to the 787 Dreamliner to serve as the backbone of their fleet as they grow and modernize their operations, open new routes and comfortably serve more passengers,” said Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is known for its fuel efficiency, long-range capability, and passenger comfort.
Ethiopian Airlines says the aircraft’s versatility also supports cargo operations in high-demand trade corridors, enabling efficient transport of both passengers and goods across Africa and beyond.
The latest order underscores Ethiopian Airlines’ ambition to consolidate its position as one of Africa’s leading global carriers while expanding its international footprint.
