In a strategic move to bolster intercontinental connectivity, Ethiopian Airlines Group, Africa’s largest aviation company and a globally recognised airline brand, has inaugurated a new passenger route between Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Porto, Portugal. The maiden flight took off from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on Tuesday, July 2, 2025, following a colourful launch ceremony graced by top dignitaries, invited guests, and senior airline officials.
With this development, Ethiopian Airlines becomes the first African carrier to establish direct access to Portugal’s second-largest city, further consolidating its growing footprint across Europe.
The new route, operated four times weekly using the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, includes a brief stopover in Madrid, Spain, and is poised to serve both leisure and business travelers seeking a reliable link between the African continent and the Iberian Peninsula.
Speaking during the launch event, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines Group, described the expansion as more than a routine addition to the airline’s vast network.
“We are truly delighted to launch a new flight to Porto, Portugal, reinforcing yet another link between Africa and Europe,” he said. “This new route is beyond a connection between Addis Ababa and Porto, it is a bridge between Africa and Europe.
As we expand our global network, we remain committed to delivering our signature Ethiopian hospitality and reliable service to every corner of the world we fly to.”
The choice of Porto as a new destination holds strategic significance. Known for its historic architecture, vibrant cultural life, and robust economic activity, Porto is not only a UNESCO World Heritage city but also a critical hub for tourism, commerce, and investment in Portugal.
The service is expected to facilitate smoother business and tourism flows between Portugal and African markets, while also enhancing bilateral cooperation between Addis Ababa and Lisbon, the capitals of both countries.
With this addition, Ethiopian Airlines now operates flights to 24 destinations in Europe, further affirming its role as the preferred carrier connecting Africa to the rest of the world. The airline’s consistent track record in service excellence was once again validated when it was named “Best Airline in Africa” for the eighth consecutive year by Skytrax during the 2025 World Airline Awards.
This launch is part of Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term strategy of opening new corridors for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange. The airline has remained at the forefront of aviation development in Africa, steadily increasing its network coverage, modernising its fleet, and championing sustainable aviation practices across the continent.
As global competition intensifies among legacy and emerging carriers, Ethiopian Airlines’ expansion to Porto is a statement of intent, a calculated step toward reinforcing its position as a dominant player in the global aviation landscape.
