Google has released its 2025 Year in Search rankings, offering a clear window into the stories, personalities, and cultural shifts that defined the Nigerian digital landscape. From headline-grabbing political moments to chart-topping music and unexpected viral trends, the list reflects a nation eager to understand its environment and celebrate its cultural dynamism.
This year, politics and public figures stood at the forefront of national interest. Senator Natasha Akpoti emerged as the most searched Nigerian personality, underscoring the intense political engagement that shaped the year. Beyond Nigeria’s borders, searches soared for updates on the Israel–Iran War and the U.S. Elections, mirroring global anxieties and shifting geopolitical realities.
Nigerians also turned to Google to revisit the legacies of icons who passed on. The death of former President Muhammadu Buhari prompted widespread reflection on his years as a national leader. Football fans similarly paid tribute to Peter Rufai, the revered Super Eagles goalkeeper, whose passing led many to revisit the highlights of his storied career. The death of Pope Francis also sparked significant search interest as Catholics around the world paused to honor his influence.
On the cultural front, Nigerian entertainment reigned supreme. The search rankings for trending songs showcased a blend of spirituality and Afrobeats, with ‘Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough)’ by Tkeyz ft. Steve Hills leading the list. Other hits like ‘Joy is Coming’ by Fido and ‘With You’ by Davido and Omah Lay reflected the country’s ever-expanding musical palette.
Nigeria’s film and TV industry also captivated audiences. Director Kemi Adetiba remained among the top searched personalities, fueled by the popularity of her hit series To Kill a Monkey, the year’s most searched local show.
Cultural curiosity thrived in 2025, with Nigerians flocking to Google to decode everything from internet slang to culinary trends. The question, “What is Labubu?”, topped the list as the mysterious viral sensation dominated digital spaces. Searches for the meaning of “Achalugo”, featured prominently in the YouTube film Love in Every Word, further showed how deeply online storytelling influenced everyday language.
In Nigerian kitchens, adventurous tastes took over. From traditional Chinchin to the globally popular Pornstar Martini and wellness-driven Ginger Shots, Nigerians explored diverse recipes, blending heritage with modern flavors.
Speaking on the release of the report, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications & Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, noted that this year’s data paints a vivid picture of a country fully engaged with its world.
> “The 2025 Year in Search is more than just data; it’s a vibrant, unfiltered mirror of our collective attention,” he said. “Whether it’s tracking the biggest headlines, reflecting on the legacies of icons we lost, or simply figuring out the latest slang, these lists show that Nigerians are using Search to actively engage with the world around them.”
As Nigeria wraps up a year defined by political intensity, cultural creativity, and fast-moving trends, Google’s 2025 Year in Search offers a compelling reflection of a nation constantly seeking, learning, and evolving.
