Growth, Security and Unity in New Year Address

Tinubu Declares 2026 a Year of Economic By Ifeanyi Nwegbu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has delivered his 2026 New Year goodwill message to Nigerians, emphasising that the country is entering “a more robust phase of economic growth” while promising deeper reforms, stronger security and shared national responsibility.

In his address, the President said Nigeria ended 2025 on a strong economic footing despite global headwinds, recording steady GDP growth across quarters, improved exchange rate stability, lower inflation and renewed investor confidence.

Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continuing major economic reforms, including tax and fiscal measures designed to bolster long‑term stability and prosperity. He said the government will accelerate the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme, targeting at least 10 million Nigerians with opportunities in agriculture, trade, food processing and mining across the nation’s 8,809 wards.

On security, the President acknowledged ongoing threats from criminal and terrorist groups and highlighted ongoing cooperation with international partners aimed at enhancing national safety.

He said security and intelligence agencies will deepen collaboration to protect lives and property while exploring decentralised policing and supervised forest guards for more effective responses.

Tinubu also reiterated the importance of unity and collective effort, urging citizens to uphold patriotism and integrity. He prayed for peace and prosperity throughout the year and asked for divine protection for the nation and its armed forces.

The speech comes amid broader policy shifts, including the implementation of new tax laws from January 1, 2026, which Tinubu’s government says are part of long‑term fiscal reform despite opposition concerns.

As Nigeria begins 2026, the President’s message focused on consolidating gains made in the past year, promoting inclusive development, enhancing security, and fostering national unity
