GTCO Drives Sustainability with “Waste for Gas” Initiative in Obafemi Owode

By Cleopatra Eki

No fewer than 3,000 families in Obafemi Owode Local Government, Mowe, Ogun State, have benefited from the “Waste for Gas” initiative, a groundbreaking corporate social responsibility (CSR) project spearheaded by Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) in collaboration with Smart Energies and local government authorities.
The initiative, designed to promote cleaner energy and sustainable waste management, aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and 13 (Climate Action). Through this project, families previously reliant on firewood and charcoal now have access to gas-powered cooking, improving their quality of life and reducing environmental pollution.
GTCO launched the “Waste for Gas” project to drive positive change in underserved communities. The initiative provides households with 3kg 3000 gas cylinders and burners in exchange for plastic waste, fostering responsible waste disposal while addressing energy poverty.
Speaking on the initiative, GTCO’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Segun Agbaje, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable impact: “We are committed to driving progress, not just through innovative financial solutions but by creating real impact in the communities where we operate. ‘Waste for Gas’ is about making life easier for families, giving them more time for education, meaningful work, or personal development. Our goal is to continually evolve sustainable platforms that empower people, strengthen communities, and contribute to socioeconomic progress.”
Hon. (Amb.) Ogunsola Adesina Lanre, Executive Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, described the initiative as a transformative intervention that benefits both the environment and the local economy. “This project is about much more than gas cylinders. It is about sustainability, economic empowerment, and creating a healthier environment. By removing plastic waste, we are reducing pollution and preventing health issues in our communities. This will be a continuous process, ensuring a long-lasting impact.”
He also expressed gratitude to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, GTCO, and Smart Energies for their collective efforts in improving the lives of rural communities.
His Royal Highness, Oba Kolewale Sowemimo, Olu of Owode Egbe, also commended the project and called on GTCO to establish a branch in the community to enhance access to financial services.
Chief Islamiat Oyelakun, Iya Oloja General, actively participated in the gas-use demonstration, emphasizing the importance of safety precautions for first-time users.
Residents of Obafemi Owode have expressed deep appreciation for the “Waste for Gas” initiative, highlighting its positive impact on their daily lives.
Dennis Peace Precious, a Political Science student at Tai Solarin University of Education, praised the project “I am very grateful for this kind gesture. This gas cylinder will make life easier for me and my family.”
Smart Energies, a key partner in the initiative, highlighted the urgent need for cleaner energy adoption and responsible waste management. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to projects that align with SDGs 7 and 13, ensuring access to affordable energy solutions while combating climate change.
Dr. Yinka Opeke, CEO Smart Energies, urged key stakeholders and organizations to support similar initiatives that empower vulnerable communities.”This project is a clear demonstration of how businesses can drive meaningful change. By aligning with SDGs 7 and 13, we are not only providing cleaner cooking alternatives but also reducing plastic waste and environmental hazards. We encourage other organizations to invest in sustainable solutions that uplift the underserved.”
The initiative was executed in two phases. The first phase involved a week-long door-to-door awareness campaign across 12 wards in Obafemi Owode Local Government, identifying families in need and educating them on gas-powered cooking benefits. The second phase, held on February 22 and 23, 2025, focused on monitoring adoption and encouraging long-term use of the new cooking method.
As GTCO continue to expand their CSR efforts, the “Waste for Gas” project serves as a model for future interventions that integrate environmental responsibility with social empowerment. By tackling energy poverty and promoting waste management, the initiative sets a new standard for corporate-driven community development in Africa.
