Slade, Co-founder of Jara Beach Resort
Jara Beach Resort, a premier destination in Lagos, has celebrated its fifth anniversary, reinforcing its reputation as a top-tier getaway for local and international travellers. Co-founded by Mark Slade and his wife Millie, the resort has grown from a modest six-room establishment to a 17-room luxury coastal retreat, offering all-inclusive experiences that set a new standard in Nigerian hospitality.
Reflecting on the journey, Slade emphasised the importance of professional and consistent service in the tourism industry. Slade likened Jara Beach Resort operational standards to international best practices, ensuring that visitors receive a world-class experience. “If you behave abroad in a certain way, we expect the same here. It’s about mutual respect and professionalism,” he stated.
Jara Beach Resort operates on a strict pre-booked, pre-paid policy to maintain security and order. “Check-in is at 2 pm, and if someone arrives at 9 pm without a booking, they won’t be allowed in. We have a secure and safe environment, and we adhere to those rules,” Slade explained. The resort maintains a robust security structure with armed police, local patrol officers, and uniformed operatives, ensuring the safety of guests and staff alike.
The resort’s presence in Museyo at the heart of Eleko, Lagos means that visitors typically plan their trips in advance rather than arriving spontaneously. “People don’t drive an hour and a half along the expressway hoping for a vacancy. Everything about our availability is on our website, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Email. We have a committed team to respond quickly,” Slade noted, stressing the resort’s efficient customer service approach.
The Beach Resort officially opened its doors in November 2019, an expansion from the couple’s humble beach hut a short walk away. The site was formerly an annex extension of Shaka Hotel, known as Shakaville.
Berexnews report Slade and his wife saw an opportunity in regenerating an existing space rather than building anew, believing in preserving history and character.
The resort initially started with five standard rooms, referred to as Ocean Deluxe, catering to couples and young families. Room six, featuring an additional bedroom, became a preferred choice for slightly larger families. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and lockdowns were imposed, Jara Beach Resort, with only six rooms at the time, was one of the first to reopen in the sector. “From June 2020, we were fully booked for three and a half to four months straight, which pushed us into expansion,” Slade recalled.
The expansion led to the construction of cabins (rooms seven, eight, and nine), designed from scratch, followed by the villas. These two-story, premium honeymoon-style accommodations boast luxury amenities, including double showers, double vanities, walk-in closets, king-size four-poster beds, and terraces overlooking the ocean, ideal for capturing breath-taking sunrises and sunsets. Rooms 10 and 11 became sought-after choices for those seeking an exclusive experience.
Further developments included deluxe family rooms (12a and 12b), offering space for up to five guests, a living room, and a dining area. The latest additions include studios (rooms 14 to 17) complete the resort’s 17-room portfolio. “These rooms offer direct ocean views and provide both single-room and multi-room options, giving families and groups flexibility,” Slade remarked.
A defining aspect of Jara Beach Resort’s success is its pioneering all-inclusive model. “We were the first in Nigeria and Lagos to offer an all-inclusive experience at a beach resort, making it simpler yet more indulgent for guests,” Slade noted. From a welcome lunch to a dedicated snack station featuring premium treats, dinner options ranging from à la carte to themed buffets, and a 12-hour alcohol service featuring premium brands, Jara Beach Resort redefines luxury.
Beyond its accommodation offerings, the resort actively fosters partnerships with related tourism agencies. “We have long-standing relationships with many agencies, and just last week, we hosted an open house with 45 registered organisations. The goal was to showcase what we offer and encourage proactive partnerships,” Slade shared. He urged the sector practitioners to include Jara Beach Resort in their travel packages, highlighting the destination’s potential as a key attraction in Lagos and across Nigeria.
Jara Beach Resort’s five-year milestone is not just a celebration of longevity but a testament to its commitment to excellence, security, and premium hospitality. As the resort continues to evolve, it remains steadfast to providing an unmatched coastal experience while maintaining the high standards that have defined its success.
