NCMM and IGA Sign MoU to Strengthen Cultural Heritage Preservation

By Cleopatra Eki

In a landmark move to safeguard Nigeria’s cultural assets, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IGA Nigeria Limited. The agreement aims to develop a structured Cultural Heritage Trail Framework that will enhance the preservation and promotion of Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Olugbile Holloway, Director-General of the NCMM, and Mogbolahan Ajala, CEO of IGA Nigeria Limited. This partnership underscores a shared commitment to creating a sustainable approach for heritage management by integrating IGA’s Stakeholder Call to Action framework into the review and update of Nigeria’s National Tentative List.

The collaboration will initially focus on the Southwestern states — Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo — leveraging IGA’s existing consultancy engagements in these areas. Lagos and Osun will serve as the pilot locations, setting the stage for a broader national rollout.

During the signing ceremony, Mr. Olugbile Holloway highlighted the importance of the partnership, saying, “This MoU marks a significant step in our efforts to preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage for future generations while promoting responsible and sustainable tourism.”

Mogbolahan Ajala expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, noting, “By working with NCMM, we aim to create a well-structured framework that not only preserves cultural heritage but also revitalizes local communities and fosters economic growth.”

This MoU is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leader in cultural heritage preservation, boost tourism, and provide new opportunities for local communities.
