Police Arrest Driver After Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua’s Convoy

By Victor Eludire

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the driver involved in the fatal traffic incident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two associates of British-Nigerian boxing star, Anthony Joshua. The arrest followed emergency investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash, which occurred along the Makun axis of the expressway.

Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Ogun State Command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the suspect is currently in custody. “The driver involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case is in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” the statement read.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) also confirmed the incident, stating that the accident occurred at Sinoma, near Sagamu, and involved two vehicles. According to the FRSC, five individuals were involved in the crash, with two fatalities recorded, two people rescued unharmed, and Anthony Joshua sustaining injuries.

In a press release, the FRSC Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi, attributed the accident to overspeeding and wrongful overtaking. He explained that the driver overtook from the right-hand side and rammed into a stationary vehicle, leading to the fatal outcome.

Anthony Joshua, who was travelling in one of the vehicles in the convoy, was immediately taken to hospital by his security team. The former world heavyweight champion was discharged from Hospital late Wednesday night after doctors confirmed he was clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
