Pyne Awards, MIPAD Move to Shape Global Tourism Influence with New African List

By Janefrances Chibuzor

A new push to map and consolidate African influence in global tourism is underway, as the Pyne Awards Africa and the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) announce plans to unveil a list of 100 leading figures shaping the industry.

The list, scheduled for release on May 25, 2026, is positioned to capture individuals of African descent whose roles span policy, investment, innovation, and cultural promotion across the travel and hospitality ecosystem.

From aviation and destination marketing to hospitality leadership and tourism development, organisers say the initiative is designed to reflect the growing footprint of Africans and diaspora actors in defining global travel experiences.

The announcement, coming ahead of the Pyne Awards Africa 2026 in Maputo, Mozambique, signals a broader attempt to not only recognise influence but also structure engagement among key stakeholders driving the sector.

Founder of The Pyne Hospitality Company, Amaka Amatokwu-Ndekwu, indicated that the effort extends beyond a conventional honours list, describing it as a platform to connect decision-makers whose work impacts how destinations are financed, positioned, and experienced globally.

Similarly, MIPAD Chairman, Kamil Olufowobi, noted that honourees will be integrated into a series of international engagements, including platforms around the United Nations General Assembly, aimed at encouraging partnerships and investment linkages.

MIPAD, known for spotlighting excellence across sectors such as business, media, and politics under the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent, is expanding its scope with this sector-specific focus on tourism and hospitality.

For industry observers, the initiative reflects a shift toward more coordinated visibility for African stakeholders in global tourism conversations, particularly at a time when the continent’s travel and hospitality sectors continue to attract increasing international interest.

The unveiling is expected to coincide with Africa Day, underscoring its alignment with broader conversations around continental identity, economic growth, and global positioning.
