A new cashew nut processing plant planned for Ogun State is set to do more than increase Nigeria’s export earnings.
Backed by a UK-supported guarantee, the project points to a cleaner and more environmentally responsible way of growing Nigeria’s agricultural economy—one that turns waste into value and reduces the hidden costs of exporting raw produce.
The plant will be developed by Robust International with financial support enabled by GuarantCo, which has provided a full guarantee for a USD 75 million debt facility.
This backing has unlocked private investment for a project that places environmental efficiency alongside economic growth.Nigeria produces hundreds of thousands of tonnes of raw cashew nuts each year, yet most are exported without processing.
Beyond lost income and jobs, this model also carries an environmental cost. Shipping bulky raw produce over long distances increases emissions, while waste from processing is generated abroad rather than managed locally.
By expanding domestic processing, the Ogun plant reduces the need to export raw nuts and keeps more of the production cycle closer to the farms where cashews are grown.A key environmental feature of the new plant is its plan to reuse waste by-products.
Cashew processing generates large volumes of shells and other residues, which are often discarded or burned in open air, contributing to pollution.
At the Ogun facility, these by-products will be converted into biomass and biofuel. This approach reduces waste, cuts reliance on fossil fuels and lowers the plant’s overall carbon footprint.
The increase in local processing capacity—from 100 to 220 metric tonnes per day—also means better resource efficiency. Processing cashews closer to where they are grown shortens supply chains and reduces fuel use linked to long-distance transport.
Over time, this can significantly lower emissions associated with Nigeria’s cashew exports.Environmental sustainability is closely linked to livelihoods. The plant is expected to source cashew nuts from around 10,000 smallholder farmers.
Stable demand and better prices can reduce pressure on farmers to expand into fragile land or adopt harmful practices in order to survive. With predictable markets, farmers are more likely to invest in better farming methods that protect soil quality and long-term productivity.
The project is also expected to create up to 900 jobs, many of them for women. While primarily a social benefit, steady employment in processing facilities can reduce dependence on environmentally damaging informal activities, such as unsustainable fuelwood harvesting, which is common in areas with limited job options.
From the financing side, the project shows how environmental considerations can be built into large investments. The debt facility was arranged through a bond platform managed by Symbiotics and fully subscribed by M&G Investments, with GuarantCo’s guarantee reducing risk.
By supporting projects that include cleaner production methods, such financing structures encourage businesses to factor environmental impact into their operations.British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Jonny Baxter, has described the project as an example of how innovative financing can support sustainable growth.
By promoting local processing and value addition, the investment helps build more resilient supply chains while reducing the environmental footprint linked to raw commodity exports.For Robust International, the Ogun plant reflects a broader shift towards responsible sourcing and processing.
The company has said it aims to strengthen local value chains while managing waste and resources more efficiently, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of the environment.
At a time when climate change and environmental degradation threaten agriculture across Africa, the Ogun cashew plant offers a practical example of how agribusiness can be part of the solution.
By turning waste into energy, cutting transport emissions and supporting more sustainable rural livelihoods, the project shows that environmental responsibility and economic development do not have to be in conflict.
