UK–Nigeria cyber alliance hits new high as Abuja wraps up major training drive

Abuja, on Thursday, projected the image of a nation steadily tightening its grip on digital security as Nigeria and the United Kingdom celebrated the successful conclusion of the TAG–Africa Cyber Programme Phase 2 training series — a milestone many described as both symbolic and strategic.

At the centre of the ceremony was the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NCCC), whose leadership steered Nigeria to emerge as the top-performing country across partner nations under the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Africa Cyber Programme.

British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Mrs Gill Lever OBE, hailed the development as evidence of deepening cooperation between the United Kingdom and the Nigeria.

She described the partnership as “a testament to the strength, trust and strategic alignment” underpinning bilateral relations, noting that both countries look forward to strengthening ties further during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s forthcoming State Visit to the UK.

But beyond diplomatic courtesies, the achievements announced were concrete.

NCCC experts completed the Certified Threat Intelligence Manager course, enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to anticipate, analyse and neutralise cyber threats.

Four Nigerian professionals were also certified among the first SIM3 cybersecurity auditors in Africa — a distinction that positions Nigeria at the forefront of cyber governance standards on the continent.

The programme further delivered the development of cyber maturity frameworks designed to safeguard critical national information infrastructure, a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s National Incident Response Plan, and foundational support for the country’s National Digital Forensics Policies and operational frameworks.

Salawu Sheriff, Technical Assistant to the National Coordinator of the NCCC, said the milestones reinforce Nigeria’s cyber readiness while strengthening the wider regional and global digital ecosystem.

The event also comes at a pivotal time, as discussions gather pace around the renewal of the UK–Nigeria Cyber Memorandum of Understanding — a framework that continues to shape cooperation in tackling cybercrime, protecting infrastructure and promoting digital resilience.

As cyber threats grow increasingly sophisticated and borderless, Thursday’s milestone in Abuja underscored a clear message: Nigeria is not merely responding to global cybersecurity challenges — it is positioning itself as a leading voice in shaping the continent’s digital defence architecture.
