UK Opens Digital Door as eVisa Rollout Signals Fresh Boost for Nigerian Travellers

By Janefrances Chibuzor

In a move that underscores deepening ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, thw UK government has announced that from 25 February 2026, all new visas issued to Nigerian travellers will go fully digital.

The transition, driven by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), means that Nigerian nationals applying for a UK Visit visa will no longer receive the familiar vignette sticker in their passports.

Instead, successful applicants will be issued an eVisa — a secure digital record of their immigration status accessible through a UKVI online account.Beyond a routine administrative update, the shift signals a broader recalibration in how the UK engages one of its most important travel markets in Africa.

It reflects a system increasingly built around speed, security and convenience — values that matter to a rising number of Nigerians travelling for business, education, tourism and family connections. For travellers — from executives heading to London meetings to parents visiting children studying abroad — the application process itself remains unchanged.

Applicants will still complete the necessary forms, attend Visa Application Centres to submit biometric information, and meet all existing eligibility requirements.

What changes comes after approval.

With the introduction of eVisas, passports are expected to be returned more quickly since there will be no need to affix a physical sticker.

Successful applicants will instead receive a secure digital record of their immigration status, accessible anytime and from anywhere. The digital format also offers stronger protection, eliminating the risk of visas being lost, stolen or tampered with — a concern that has long accompanied international travel.

For Nigeria’s expanding middle class, growing student population and cross-border entrepreneurs, the reform reduces paperwork while introducing a more seamless, technology-driven interface with the UK immigration system.

It aligns with a global shift toward digital borders, positioning the UK as a destination adapting to modern travel realities.Welcoming the development, British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, Gill Lever OBE, described the transition as part of the UK’s commitment to modernising its border system while making travel easier for Nigerians.

Her remarks reinforce the message that the reform is not merely technical but strategic — aimed at strengthening mobility between both countries. The move also reflects the UK’s recognition of Nigeria’s importance as a partner in trade, education and innovation.

Thousands of Nigerian students enrol annually in British universities, while business and tourism exchanges between the two countries continue to expand. By digitising visa issuance, the UK enhances accessibility and demonstrates responsiveness to this growing demand.Importantly, Nigerians who currently hold valid vignette stickers in their passports are unaffected; their visas remain valid until expiration or replacement.

For new applicants approved from 25 February 2026 onward, the only additional step will be to create a free UKVI account to access their eVisa.Ultimately, the rollout marks another milestone in the UK’s ambition to establish a fully digital border — reducing reliance on paper documentation while strengthening security controls.

For Nigerian travellers, the message is clear: entry into the UK is becoming faster, smarter and more secure, reinforcing a long-standing relationship built on movement, opportunity and shared connections.
