The United Kingdom has appointed veteran diplomat Peter Vowles as its next High Commissioner to Nigeria, a move that highlights Britain’s determination to deepen its strategic partnership with the West African nation.
The UK Government announced that Vowles will take over the Abuja mission in September 2026, succeeding Dr Richard Montgomery CMG, who remains in office until the handover.
A career diplomat with extensive experience across Africa and Asia, Vowles has served as British Ambassador to Zimbabwe and Myanmar and held senior leadership roles within the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
His appointment comes as both countries continue to strengthen collaboration in trade, investment, development and regional security.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Vowles said he was honoured to represent the United Kingdom in Nigeria. “Nigeria is a country of immense importance to the United Kingdom, and I look forward to working closely with Nigerian partners to strengthen our relationship across trade, development and security.”
Throughout his career, Vowles has worked in Bangladesh, India, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo, building expertise in diplomacy and international development.
He also served as Transformation Director and Director for Asia, the Caribbean and Overseas Territories within the UK Government.
The incoming High Commissioner is expected to build on existing UK-Nigeria cooperation while advancing shared priorities in economic growth, security and sustainable development.
