UK Targets Nigeria’s Digital Economy With New Reform Drive Across Five States

By Janefrances Chibuzor

The United Kingdom has launched a fresh push to support Nigeria’s digital transformation with a broad package of reforms focused on improving digital governance, expanding internet access and attracting private investment.

Leading the effort is the SPRIRET initiative, a state-focused programme that will begin in Abia, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu and Niger states. The project aims to eliminate regulatory barriers, strengthen institutions and create conditions for faster broadband deployment and digital innovation.

Working with the Initiative for Digital Inclusion, the programme will help participating states improve policy frameworks, strengthen public institutions, build human capacity and enhance digital service delivery.

The UK plans to extend the initiative to additional states in future phases.
British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter said the partnership demonstrates the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s ambition to build a more inclusive and innovation-driven digital economy.

Enugu State Secretary to the Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said SPRIRET fills a major policy and institutional gap that will help ensure long-term success for digital investments in the state.

The UK is also rolling out a Technical Assistance Facility to strengthen the Universal Service Provision Fund and improve digital access nationwide.

In addition, the STRIDE Nigeria project will deepen awareness of digital rights, improve compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act and train professionals in data governance through fellowships and a nationwide public awareness campaign.

The initiatives underscore the UK’s growing investment in Nigeria’s digital future, with a focus on stronger institutions, wider digital inclusion and sustainable economic growth.
